Pioneering the next generation of sustainable building with Mass Timber

Steve Marshall has played a critical role in The Sierra Institute’s work in mass timber.  He has been our go-to subject matter expert on a number of fronts.  These have included:  A report prepared for the State of California that contained mass timber policy recommendations; launching of the first fire-recovery CLT single-family housing in the U.S.; and the creation of Mosaic Timber which will provide “Made in California” CLT to the marketplace.

Philo Ventures benefitted from the advice and counsel of Steve Marshall and his associates Oscar Faoro and Lloyd Pederson as we undertook our initial entry into mass timber.  They were able to provide us detailed sector information and very specific advice that informed how we built our business model.  Critically, when it came time to consider designs for specific building typologies we were considering, Steve was able to put together highly experienced and effective design and engineering teams that were customized for our specific needs.

Steve Marshall has been the key strategic leader in integrating mass timber into U.S. building supply chains and markets since 2012.  His political and policy leadership has been paramount in the success of mass timber in the U.S. markets. I am proud to call him a friend and ally. Steve’s work to help create lower-carbon pathways towards decarbonizing our building industry, to nurture healthier forests, and reach out to rural communities, mills and foresters, is constantly an inspiration to me and my work at atelierjones.

Steve is likely the most knowledgeable person in the country regarding the nexus of mass timber, our forests, politics, the environment, manufacturing, and the market.

For over three decades, Steve has served as an incredible creative force and wealth of knowledge, helping members of Congress make informed policy changes that will have a lasting impact on our country for years to come.

Steve has been an instrumental force for innovation in mass timber in North America and beyond. His impact is difficult to measure but there is no doubt in my mind his efforts have fundamentally 
connected the future of building to the future of forests.

The International Mass Timber Conference’s 2020 report projected the expected growth of mass timber in the United States and the carbon that would be sequestered as a result of that growth.  They dubbed the phenomenon “The Marshall Effect.
